For a fun day activity that is sure to delight all ages, head to Breckenridge to see the town’s famous toll sculpture. Isak Heartstone is a huge wooden troll sculpture located in the middle of a popular hiking trail, which has become quite the tourist attraction.

This 15-foot-tall figure was created through a collaboration between local artists and community members who volunteered their time and materials to make it happen. Be sure to bring your camera for some great photos!

Go underground at Cave of the Winds Mountain Park

Cave of the Winds Mountain Park is located in Manitou Springs and offers visitors a unique underground experience. At the park, you can explore an old limestone cave discovered over 150 years ago and take in the breathtaking views from its various viewing platforms.

On the tour, you can admire the majestic stalactites, stalagmites, and other dramatic rock formations shaped by nature over time. You can even take a thrilling adventure tour of the cave’s underground passages for an unforgettable experience! The park also has several outdoor activities, such as hiking trails, zip-lining, and even rappelling!

Take the Coors Brewery tour in Golden

Golden is an iconic city located in the Rocky Mountains that has become a hotspot for craft beer lovers. The city’s Coors Brewery offers daily tours of its facilities that will provide you with a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process.

You can learn how Coors’ signature beers are made and taste several samples throughout the tour. The brewery also has a gift shop, where you can purchase souvenirs and beer to take home. It is a great way to spend half a day for beer lovers.

Visit the casinos in Black Hawk

Black Hawk is a historic mining town located in the Rocky Mountains and home to some of Colorado’s best casinos. Visit the town for an exciting night out with your friends and try your luck at one of its many casinos. You’ll find dozens of slot machines, table games, and live entertainment throughout the city. The most popular casinos in Black Hawk include Ameristar, Lady Luck, and Golden Gulch.

Go star gazing at Chimney Rock National Monument

Chimney Rock National Monument is an incredible natural landmark located in southwestern Colorado. The area offers stunning views of the San Juan Mountains, as well as some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see. Enjoy a peaceful evening stargazing and admire the millions of stars that light up the sky. You can also take a guided tour to learn about the constellations and other interesting facts about astronomy.

Learn about the history of Colorado at The Museum of the Mountain West

The Museum of the Mountain West is located in Montrose, Colorado, and offers a fascinating look into the history of the state. The museum has an extensive collection of artifacts from prehistoric times to present day, including Native American artifacts, historic photos, and old tools used by settlers in the area. 

Visitors can learn about topics such as cattle ranching during the 1800s and the building of railroads in the region. The Museum of the Mountain West is a great way to discover Colorado’s unique history up close.

Try some Colorado style pizza….or the famous green chili

Over the years, Colorado has become a foodie destination, with a myriad of flavors and cuisines. Colorado-style pizza is a unique style of pizza – originally from Colorado and now enjoyed by pizza lovers around the world. It has a thick crust – which is crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside.

You can top it with a variety of meats, vegetables, and cheese. The pizza sauce is spicy and tangy, making it a perfect combination with the toppings. Some of the famous pizzerias that serve Colorado-style pizza include Beau Jo’s, Anthony’s Pizza, and Marco’s Coal-Fired Pizzeria. 

Another state delicacy is Rocky Mountain oysters, also known as cowboy oysters – they are not oysters at all. They are actually deep-fried bull testicles, a delicacy that’s surprisingly delicious. Although the name might make you cringe, these oysters are a popular dish in the Centennial State. 

Green chili is another staple dish that you should try when visiting Colorado. It is a fiery and flavorful stew made with green chile peppers, pork, tomatoes, and spices. Other popular foods to try include Palisade peaches, bison burgers, elk steaks and craft beers.

Stand in four states at once at Four Corners Monument

The Four Corners Monument is a unique spot in the United States located in the Southwest corner of Colorado. It marks the only point where four states meet – Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. At this site, visitors can stand with one foot in each state at once! 

There are many activities to enjoy here, including picnicking, hiking and exploring the area’s history. The Monument also features a variety of Native American outdoor sculptures and artwork that are worth checking out.

Visit the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo

The Colorado State Fair in Pueblo is a must-visit for everyone. It combines the excitement of a carnival, the thrill of rodeo shows and the joy of experiencing local agriculture and food. Each year, the fair draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from all across Colorado and beyond.

From exploring the intricate art and craft exhibits to chowing down on delicious funnel cakes and deep-fried favorites, there’s something for everyone at the Colorado State Fair. But what really sets this fair apart is its emphasis on celebrating and showcasing the diversity of Colorado’s ranching and farming communities.

Ashcroft Ghost Town in Colorado is a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the state’s mining past. Located just two miles outside of Aspen, this abandoned town has breathtaking Alpine views. It offers visitors a glimpse into what life was like during the Silver Rush of the late 1800s.

The town was once home to over 2,000 people but now stands eerily silent with only a handful of buildings left standing. The remnants of decaying cabins and saloons offer a fascinating glimpse into the Old West with many buildings retaining their vintage furniture and artifacts.

Visitors can stroll through the deserted streets or trek up to nearby peaks to glimpse the town from above. As you explore the remains of Ashcroft, you can almost hear the sounds of pickaxes and the clanking of mining carts.

Colorado is simply stunning and spectacular. It is perfect for families, couples, and all kinds of travelers. The Centennial State is made for road tripping historic towns and exploring national parks. Follow in the steps of the Pueblo and Ute people, prospectors, and pioneers as you discover all that Colorado has to offer. Denver Christkindlmarket

A German-style holiday market in downtown Denver. Wooden huts host European and local crafts, live music, warm drinks, and seasonal food. This is one of my favorite holiday events to attend in the Mile High City. 

Blossoms of Light at Denver Botanic Gardens

The York Street gardens are lit with immersive displays along a walking path. It’s one of Denver’s most loved light shows during the holiday season. Be sure to get tickets in advance as the light show can get pretty crowded on popular nights.

Zoo Lights at Denver Zoo

The zoo is transformed with millions of lights and festive sculptures across its grounds. It runs through early January. Kids love the chance to see animal themed light displays as well as the chance to observe some animals by night. 

Mile High Tree

This is a 110-foot digital light installation at the Civic Center Park. It includes LED displays set to music through the season. You can even walk under it to see the changing lights. The tree is surrounded by other large holiday light displays and is great to take photos with the family. 

Luminova Holidays at Elitch Gardens

At Elitch Gardens theme park, Christmas is magical. The entire park is decked with massive holiday displays, tunnels of lights, interactive features, as well as fantastic thrill rides amid the festive decor. The tickets, while not inexpensive, offer lots of fun activities for the whole family. Order your tickets before Thanksgiving for most discounts. 

Hudson Holidays at Hudson Gardens

One of the newer Christmas events in the Denver area! Hudson Gardens and Event Center in Littleton hosts a seasonal light show with decorated trees, light tunnels, and holiday scenes. Families can have fun strolling through the gardens and exploring the maze. 

Georgetown Christmas Market

Just an hour outside of Denver, you will find Georgetown, Colorado. This mountain-town has a wonderful holiday market on the first two weekends of December. Expect outdoor stalls, horse-drawn wagon rides, carolers, and traditional holiday charm.

A Christmas Carol at Denver Center for the Performing Arts

A theatrical production of this Dickens classic runs in Denver every holiday season. For several locals, A Christmas Carol is their favorite holiday tradition – and they love to watch as Scrooge tried to redeem himself on stage!

Parade of Lights

Denver’s annual parade features several elaborate floats, bands, performers, giant balloons, and special performances. The parade brings festive energy throughout downtown. It’s the perfect event to kickoff the holiday season and held first Saturday in December.

The Brown Palace Holiday Tea

The historic Brown Palace Hotel in Denver has been around since the Old West and Colorado Gold Rush days. It serves special holiday afternoon teas surrounded by festive décor. I have gone to Vail twice at Christmas. It’s very Christmas Card like and stunning. Everywhere you will find pure alpine magic: twinkling lights, cozy lodges, festive events, world-class skiing, and European-style charm. Of course a must is Vail’s viral Hot Chocolate at the Four Seasons, topped with a giant block of marshmallow!

Breckenridge is pure Christmas magic. Stroll down historic Main Street lined with thousands of twinkling lights, catch the annual Lighting of Breckenridge & Race of the Santas, then cozy up with hot cocoa by the fireplace. Oh, and the skiing is pretty spectacular too!

Estes Park

Step into a Hallmark movie in Georgetown, where the Victorian Holiday Market, horse-drawn sleigh rides, and the famous Georgetown Christmas Market make this historic mining town one of the state’s most beloved holiday stops. Take a stop by the famous Busy Bee Cab Co. car from the John Denver film, The Christmas Gift.

Kebler Pass, Crested Butte

Often dubbed one of the best places in the country to see fall foliage, Kebler Pass is home to one of the largest aspen groves in North America. It truly dazzles in late September and early October. The scenic byway between Crested Butte and Paonia winds through dense, golden forests with dramatic mountain backdrops. Don’t forget your camera. The pass is a photographer’s dream. Don’t miss hiking the Dyke Trail or snapping photos at peak colors from the roadside.

Maroon Bells Snowmass, Aspen

The Maroon Bells near Aspen are iconic year-round, but in fall they become something truly spectacular. Golden aspens line the lake and frame the twin peaks, creating a postcard-perfect view. The easy Maroon Lake Scenic Trail has the best views of the area. Access is limited during peak fall that arrives from mid to late September. Arrive early or reserve a shuttle to beat the crowds.

Trail Ridge Road, Rocky Mountain National Park

At over 12,000 feet, this is one of the highest paved roads in the U.S. During fall, the road offers sweeping views of changing colors below and alpine tundra above. Look out for elk bugling during the rutting season. This is an unforgettable autumn experience, especially if you’ve never seen before. Be sure to visit early to mid-September before the road closes due to snow. Also a must visit is the Alpine Visitor Center located on the road.

San Juan Skyway in Southwest Colorado

This 236 mile loop drive connects charming mountain towns like Durango, Silverton, Ouray, and Telluride. It’s packed with fiery foliage, dramatic cliffs, and peaceful valleys and is one of Colorado’s most scenic drives. The Million Dollar Highway portion is especially breathtaking in fall. You can see dramatic mountain vistas, waterfalls, and vibrant aspens tucked into deep canyons. Visit late September to early October for the best fall colors in Southwest Colorado.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

If you’re short on time but still want a dose of fall color, Golden Gate Canyon offers a quick escape from the Mile High City. The state park offers great fall foliage with easy access via hiking trails. Quaking aspens light up the hillsides in yellows and oranges. Its aspen groves, meadows, and mountain views make it a favorite for Denver locals. My favorite is the Raccoon Trail or Panorama Point for sweeping autumn views.

Guanella Pass, Georgetown

Just an hour from Denver, this high-country pass offers big fall color rewards without the long drive. It is a favorite for weekend leaf-peepers, this pass is filled with gold-drenched aspens set against rugged peaks. The contrast of golden aspens against the Rockies is stunning. It’s a relatively short drive but offers big rewards in terms of views and easy hikes. My favorite stops along the way include Historic Georgetown, Guanella Pass Brewery, and Silver Dollar Lake trail.

Buffalo Pass, Steamboat Springs

Tucked away in northwest Colorado, Buffalo Pass is a less-crowded gem. I happened on this just by chance, on a fall drive. Buffalo Pass offers vibrant aspens and peaceful mountain scenery. In fall, the hills light up with color and the serenity of this area makes it a peaceful, slower-paced alternative. Combine it with a soak in Strawberry Park Hot Springs for the ultimate fall day. Fish Creek falls is also great to visit as is charming Steamboat Springs.

Aspen and Independence Pass

Aspen lives up to its name with hillsides of golden trees. Combine your visit with a drive over Independence Pass for high-elevation color and sweeping mountain views. The colors peak around mid to late September. If you want to skip the crowds, hike Cathedral Lake or American Lake hikes for fall foliage away from the crowds.

Dallas Divide, Ridgway

The view from Dallas Divide is one of the most iconic fall scenes in Colorado. With Mt. Sneffels in the background and fiery glowing aspens foliage in the foreground, it’s the perfect fall postcard. It is also one of the most iconic vistas in Southwest Colorado. The views at sunrise from the overlook on CO-62 are really pretty.

Crystal Mill near Marble

For a bit of adventure and one of the most photographed fall locations in Colorado, make the trip to Crystal Mill. The rustic mill framed by fall color and rushing rivers is unforgettable and quite fairy-tale-like. The mill, perched on a rocky outcrop above the river, was built in 1892 as a powerhouse. The best time to visit is late September. You’ll need a high-clearance 4×4 or opt to hike or take a jeep tour on the 6‑mile gravel shelf road from Marble.

Cottonwood Pass, Buena Vista

Cottonwood Pass, just west of Buena Vista, is a spectacular hotspot for fall color in Colorado. Towering to 12,126 ft on the Continental Divide, the drive offers a stunning variety of yellow, orange, and red aspens and cottonwoods. Peak foliage typically occurs in mid-to-late September and can extend through early October, higher elevations often reaching peak a bit earlier. It’s a great option if you’re near central Colorado and want an off-the-beaten-path experience.

Old Stage Road, Victor

Just south of Victor, is one of my favorite hidden gems for fall – Old Stage Road, the old Gold Camp route. Driving this rugged dirt road in late September, you’re surrounded by towering aspens glowing in fiery gold and orange tones. The way those bright leaves pop against the deep green pines makes you feel as if you’re in a painting!

Pikes Peak Highway

Cruising up Pikes Peak Highway in fall is an absolute vibe. The road winds through groves of glowing aspens up the mountain peak. Around every curve, there’s a new insta-worthy view, from blazing hillsides to deep blue skies. The air gets crisp as you gain elevation, and by the time you hit Devil’s Playground, it’s pure autumn magic. Pack layers, bring snacks, and blast your road trip playlist – this drive is peak (pun intended) Colorado fall.

Peak to Peak Highway

Leaf peeping on the Peak to Peak Highway is next level! The aspen trees turn golden, you’re cruising past cozy mountain towns, rolling hills, and fiery forests – totally postcard-worthy. Stop in Nederland or Allenspark for some chill small-town vibes, cozy coffee, slice of pie, or cider refuels. The views? Unreal. The colors usually peak late September to early October, and the whole route feels like fall turned up to eleven. If you’re chasing foliage, this scenic highway is a must.

Tips for Visiting Colorado in Fall

• Peak foliage varies by elevation but generally runs mid-September through early October. Higher elevations change first (early to mid-September), while lower areas peak later (late September to early October).
• Weekdays offer fewer crowds than weekends, especially in popular spots like Maroon Bells. Go midweek or really early in the day for a peaceful experience.
• Bring layers, as mountain weather changes quickly and fall mornings can be chilly. Be ready for sun, wind, and even snow.
• Don’t forget your camera, snacks, and plenty of water for roadside stops and short hikes.
• Check road conditions before you go. Some scenic byways may close early due to snow, especially at high elevations.

Fall in Colorado is fleeting but spectacular. Take a scenic drive through golden aspen tunnels, head out on a hike to an alpine lake, or soak in the views with a cup of cider, these destinations promise unforgettable autumn beauty. With more than 300 miles of hiking trails, towering peaks, and wildlife sightings galore, RMNP is a summer essential. Drive Trail Ridge Road which is one of the highest paved roads in the U.S. Follow it up with a hike to Dream Lake or Sky Pond for jaw-dropping views.

Crested Butte

Known as the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado,” Crested Butte is absolutely stunning in July. The hiking, biking, and scenic chairlifts are amazing plus the town itself has a cozy, Old West feel with no chain stores in sight.

Telluride

This former mining town turned luxury mountain escape is packed with summer charm. Ride the free gondola for sweeping views, hike to Bridal Veil Falls, and catch outdoor concerts or film festivals in Town Park. Telluride is just amazing!

Aspen & Maroon Bells

While Aspen is famous for skiing, summer is equally spectacular. Hike or bike around Maroon Bells which is one of the most photographed mountain scenes in the U.S. Enjoy upscale dining and arts events in town while you visit.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Where else can you sled down the tallest dunes in North America, splash in a seasonal creek, and camp under some of the darkest skies in the country? This otherworldly landscape is a true Colorado treasure.

Durango & the San Juan Mountains

Ride the historic steam train from Durango to Silverton, go whitewater rafting on the Animas River, or explore the stunning San Juan Skyway. This corner of Southwest Colorado feels like a summer postcard come to life.

Breckenridge

This dramatic, steep canyon is a jaw-dropping surprise. Enjoy scenic drives, starry skies, and quiet trails without the crowds of larger parks. The views from the South Rim are unforgettable.

Boulder combines mountain access with college-town vibes. Hike the Flatirons, stroll Pearl Street Mall, or catch a concert at Chautauqua. It’s a perfect quick getaway just 45 minutes from Denver.
