For a fun day activity that is sure to delight all ages, head to Breckenridge to see the town’s famous toll sculpture. Isak Heartstone is a huge wooden troll sculpture located in the middle of a popular hiking trail, which has become quite the tourist attraction.

This 15-foot-tall figure was created through a collaboration between local artists and community members who volunteered their time and materials to make it happen. Be sure to bring your camera for some great photos!

Cave of the Winds Mountain Park is located in Manitou Springs and offers visitors a unique underground experience. At the park, you can explore an old limestone cave discovered over 150 years ago and take in the breathtaking views from its various viewing platforms.

On the tour, you can admire the majestic stalactites, stalagmites, and other dramatic rock formations shaped by nature over time. You can even take a thrilling adventure tour of the cave’s underground passages for an unforgettable experience! The park also has several outdoor activities, such as hiking trails, zip-lining, and even rappelling!

Take the Coors Brewery tour in Golden

Golden is an iconic city located in the Rocky Mountains that has become a hotspot for craft beer lovers. The city’s Coors Brewery offers daily tours of its facilities that will provide you with a behind-the-scenes look at the brewing process.

You can learn how Coors’ signature beers are made and taste several samples throughout the tour. The brewery also has a gift shop, where you can purchase souvenirs and beer to take home. It is a great way to spend half a day for beer lovers.

Visit the casinos in Black Hawk

Black Hawk is a historic mining town located in the Rocky Mountains and home to some of Colorado’s best casinos. Visit the town for an exciting night out with your friends and try your luck at one of its many casinos. You’ll find dozens of slot machines, table games, and live entertainment throughout the city. The most popular casinos in Black Hawk include Ameristar, Lady Luck, and Golden Gulch.

Go star gazing at Chimney Rock National Monument

Chimney Rock National Monument is an incredible natural landmark located in southwestern Colorado. The area offers stunning views of the San Juan Mountains, as well as some of the clearest night skies you’ll ever see. Learn about the history of Colorado at The Museum of the Mountain West

The Museum of the Mountain West is located in Montrose, Colorado, and offers a fascinating look into the history of the state. The museum has an extensive collection of artifacts from prehistoric times to present day, including Native American artifacts, historic photos, and old tools used by settlers in the area.

Try some Colorado style pizza….or the famous green chili

Over the years, Colorado has become a foodie destination, with a myriad of flavors and cuisines. Colorado-style pizza is a unique style of pizza – originally from Colorado and now enjoyed by pizza lovers around the world. It has a thick crust – which is crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside.

You can top it with a variety of meats, vegetables, and cheese. The pizza sauce is spicy and tangy, making it a perfect combination with the toppings. Some of the famous pizzerias that serve Colorado-style pizza include Beau Jo’s, Anthony’s Pizza, and Marco’s Coal-Fired Pizzeria. 

Another state delicacy is Rocky Mountain oysters, also known as cowboy oysters – they are not oysters at all. They are actually deep-fried bull testicles, a delicacy that’s surprisingly delicious. Although the name might make you cringe, these oysters are a popular dish in the Centennial State. 

Green chili is another staple dish that you should try when visiting Colorado. It is a fiery and flavorful stew made with green chile peppers, pork, tomatoes, and spices. Other popular foods to try include Palisade peaches, bison burgers, elk steaks and craft beers.

Stand in four states at once at Four Corners Monument

The Four Corners Monument is a unique spot in the United States located in the Southwest corner of Colorado. It marks the only point where four states meet – Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado. At this site, visitors can stand with one foot in each state at once! 

There are many activities to enjoy here, including picnicking, hiking and exploring the area’s history. The Monument also features a variety of Native American outdoor sculptures and artwork that are worth checking out.

Ashcroft Ghost Town in Colorado is a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the state’s mining past. Located just two miles outside of Aspen, this abandoned town has breathtaking Alpine views. It offers visitors a glimpse into what life was like during the Silver Rush of the late 1800s.

The town was once home to over 2,000 people but now stands eerily silent with only a handful of buildings left standing. The remnants of decaying cabins and saloons offer a fascinating glimpse into the Old West with many buildings retaining their vintage furniture and artifacts.

Visitors can stroll through the deserted streets or trek up to nearby peaks to glimpse the town from above. As you explore the remains of Ashcroft, you can almost hear the sounds of pickaxes and the clanking of mining carts.

Colorado is simply stunning and spectacular. It is perfect for families, couples, and all kinds of travelers. The Centennial State is made for road tripping historic towns and exploring national parks. Follow in the steps of the Pueblo and Ute people, prospectors, and pioneers as you discover all that Colorado has to offer. Where is Mesa Verde National Park?

Mesa Verde is located in the Four Corners region in Southwestern Colorado. It is a short drive from the cities of Cortez, Mancos, or Durango. There is a lot to see within the park and the sites are far apart from each other. And so, I’d recommend spending at least a couple of days in the park to see most of it. You can either base yourself in the nearby cities or camp / lodge within the park.

On a Mesa Verde trip, you can not only explore ancient ruins and learn about the Ancestral Pueblo tribes that lived here but also hike fun trails, enjoy starry night skies, and see Colorado wildlife. Here are really cool things to do in Mesa Verde Park that will take you by surprise.

Begin your visit at the Visitor and Research Center

Begin your trip at Mesa Verde Visitor and Research Center located just near the park entrance. See the exhibits on the lifestyle of the Pueblos, learn about park history, get park maps and see a replica of ladder used to ascend Balcony House tour. Kids can get their Junior Ranger Badges at the center. The Ancient Ones sculpture outside the visitor center shows the Ancestral Pueblo climbing up the cliff edge – it is a great work of art.

Drive the Cliff Palace Loop Road

Most major sites of Mesa Verde are located on the Cliff Palace Loop Road, also called the Mesa Top Ruins Road. This paved road is 6 miles long and is closed in winter. It starts at the Chapin Mesa area and curves through the park, passing by popular sites such as Cliff Palace, Balcony House, House of Many Windows Overlook, and Hemenway House.

Stop and admire these prehistoric sites. Drive around to get a feel of this majestic landscape. The loop road also offers amazing views of the surrounding canyons and cliffs. Be sure to stop by the Mesa Verde Visitor Center before starting the loop to pick up a map.

Tour the majestic Cliff Palace

One of the reasons Mesa Verde should be on your bucket list is to see Cliff Palace. This is the largest and most well-preserved cliff dwelling in the park. The ranger led tour is so cool – you can step back in time and walk around the many structures that make up Cliff Palace. This prehistoric village had over 150 rooms and 23 kivas – over 100 people lived here at its peak.

It amazes me how the ancient ancestral Pueblos built such intricate stacked ruins in hard to reach locations. The tour is about an hour long and involves some steep ladders but is mostly easy to attempt. I have taken this tour many times and on one occasion was lucky enough to see a Native American ranger playing a flute amongst the ruins – ethereal!

The ranger led tour tickets are released 15 days prior and get sold out very fast – sit at your computer in advance to score one of these. And trust me, you do need to take the ranger led tour for the most involved experience. Wear comfortable shoes, reach early, and bring water for the hike in!

Admire the view from Cliff Palace Overlook

A short trail of 0.4 miles from the Cliff Palace parking lot will take you to Cliff Palace Overlook. From here, you can enjoy a birds eye view of this stunning ruin. The view is breathtaking – you can spot the many rooms as kivas on the cliffside below.

It’s an awesome place to take photos and really soak up the beauty of the area. This is also where you meet the ranger for guided tours. If you are not able to get a visit to the Cliff Palace tour, we recommend admiring the sheer ingenuity of this ruin from the overlook.

Go on an adventure at Balcony House

If you ask me – Balcony House over Cliff Palace anytime, provided you’re physically able to climb a 30 feet ladder, climb through a narrow passageway, and have no breathing problems. Balcony House was built in the 13th century and is impressive in a thousand unique ways. The dwelling is much smaller than Cliff Palace, with just over 38 rooms and 2 kivas. It is said to have supported about 30 people.

The hour long Balcony House tour is like an Indiana Jones adventure. You have to climb several ladders and crawl on all fours through a 12 feet long narrow passage to see this ruin. The highlight is the 32 foot long ladder needed to reach the ruin – hence its name! Once you’re up, you can explore the granaries, kivas, and other rooms here. Admire the park views from the cliff edge. Bring plenty of water, sturdy shoes, and a fun attitude for this tour.

Hike the Soda Canyon Overlook trail

The Soda Canyon Overlook trail is a 1.2 mile long hiking trail on the Cliff Place Loop Road. This easy loop takes hikers across the canyon, through juniper trees and pinon pines, providing outstanding views of the mesas and cliffs of Mesa Verde National Park.

From the overlook point you can see Balcony House perched high above the cliff as well as other dwellings within the park. This is a great short hike for all ages and fitness levels. Make sure to bring along your zoom camera or binoculars to marvel at the ruins.

See the exhibits at Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum

The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning more about the Ancestral Puebloan culture. It is located along the Mesa Top Ruins park road, about 20 miles from the park entrance.

Visitors can browse through an extensive collection of artifacts, pottery, and photographs preserved by the National Park Service. The museum also has screens a 20 minute video, ‘Footprints of Our Ancestors’ which describes the fascinating history of this park. We recommend keeping an hour aside for the museum.

Learn about the history of the Spruce Tree House

Curious to know just how fragile Mesa Verde ruins are? Take the time to learn about the Spruce Tree House! It is the third largest cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde National Park. The 20-room ruin is nestled in a side canyon off Spruce Tree Canyon and perched on a ledge just below the rim of Chapin Mesa. The NPS offered tours of the ruin till 2015 but now it can only be seen from above because of the crumbling sandstone rock above the ruins.

This incredible example of Ancestral Puebloan architecture is a beautiful reminder of how conservation efforts are essential to preserve our heritage. Make sure to view Spruce Tree House ruins from Spruce Treehouse Overlook Trail behind the museum, which offers stunning views of both the ruin and canyon!

Explore the park geology on Spruce Canyon trail

The Spruce Canyon trail is a 2.4 mile long loop in the Spruce Tree House area behind the Chapin Mesa museum. It takes you deep within the Spruce Canyon and offers a chance to understand the parks unique geology.

The moderate nature trail starts at Spruce Treehouse Overlook and then continues through spruce and fir trees. You can see the native plants and trees as well as spot wildlife including deer, squirrels, and plenty of birds.

See the petroglyphs in Mesa Verde

Starting just near the Spruce Canyon trail, you will find the Petroglyph Point Trail. This is one of our favorite hiking trails in Mesa Verde National Park. The trail is 2.4 miles long and involves rock steps as well as some scrambling. The trail takes you to the Petroglyph Panel at 1.4 miles.

This is a beautiful 30 feet wide archeological site with lots of rock art made by the Ancestral Puebloans. You can walk around and identify the petroglyphs like handprints, spirals, animal figures – there are hundreds of them!

Drive the Mesa Top Loop Road

The Mesa Top Loop Road is perfect for those who want to explore many ruins in a short amount of time. The road is open year round and quite popular. It is a 6 mile long road that takes you through the most popular sites of the Mesa Verde National Park, including the Sun Temple and the Square Tower House Overlook.

You can also spot wildlife including mule deer, bobcats, and rabbits on the route. The views from various overlooks along the road are simply stunning – you can spot the entire Cliff Palace in one frame from the Sun Temple. I would suggest keeping an hour to hour and a half for this drive.

Admire the views from Park Point Fire Lookout

The Park Point Fire Lookout Point is the highest point in Mesa Verde National Park. It has an altitude of 8572 feet and is very popular to visit. The observation points are accessible by a short walk of 0.2 miles from the parking lot – to reach, you need to take the detour from Mesa Top Ruins Road.

At Park Point Fire Lookout, visitors can enjoy unparalleled views of both the La Plata Mountains and Mesa Verde Plateau – you can even spot Pagosa Springs and Durango if it’s a clear day! This is a great spot to catch sunrise or sunset views.

Go off the beaten path at Wetherill Mesa

Chapin Mesa with its museum and popular ruins is the most visited area of Mesa Verde National Park. If you are looking for more solitude and a unique experience, consider visiting Wetherill Mesa area. Here you can hike to Step House on a self guided tour or take a ranger led tour of Long House, the second largest cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde.

Long House can also be seen from an overlook. Wetherill Mesa is open only from spring to fall and requires significant walking or biking to access the sites. Wetherill Mesa is a great way to explore the wild, less touristy side of Mesa Verde.

Enjoy a stay at Far View Lodge

The Far View Lodge is the only hotel located inside Mesa Verde National Park. It has breathtaking views of the La Plata Mountains and overlooks several archeological sites. The lodge also has a restaurant, gift shop and is an excellent place to stay.

I’d highly recommend spending a few days here to really experience all that Mesa Verde has to offer. The best part? You can take a short walk and visit the Far View Sites near the lodge – a group of ruins that includes some of the earliest Ancestral Puebloan buildings!

Camp under the stars at Morefield Campground

The Morefield Campground is located on the west side of Mesa Verde National Park, just off HWY 160. It’s a great spot for camping, hiking and even stargazing! The campground offers several sites that can accommodate tents or RVs and has full hook-ups. There are also picnic tables and fire pits. Several hiking trails also start at the campground.

Enjoy star gazing in Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park is one of my favorite places to go star gazing in Colorado! It is designated as an International Dark Sky Park and is free from light pollution, making it ideal for stargazing. At night, you can admire the stars and constellations – an experience that offers visitors a unique perspective of the park.

I love planning a stargazing visit in the summer months as there are no clouds and the moon can be seen due to its low position in the sky – so make sure you bring your telescope! You will be amazed at the sheer number of stars in the sky.

Admire Mesa Verde in winter

Mesa Verde transforms into a winter wonderland during the colder months. Despite the cool temperatures, visitors are rewarded with a unique and unforgettable experience. With fewer crowds and off-season discounts, the park is a peaceful escape where visitors can hike untouched snow-covered trails and see the ancient ruins of the Anasazi culture. The winter landscape, blanketed in snow, creates an ethereal atmosphere that only adds to the mystical allure of this UNESCO site.

Explore Enchant Christmas at Fair Park

Fair Park turns into a glowing labyrinth of lights, markets, and holiday scenes that seem to hum with their own warmth. Enchant Christmas isn’t just an event — it’s an entire world made of twinkling tunnels, ice skating paths, and whimsical sculptures. Kids race through the light maze while couples linger under glowing arches.

The sheer scale is astonishing. You walk beneath swirling galaxies of color, past market stalls that smell of cinnamon and pine, and realize how easy it is to feel like a child again.

Classic Christmas in Dallas feels like a warm storybook unfolding under city lights. Carols drift through downtown squares, trees shimmer, and horse-drawn carriages clip past glowing storefronts, wrapping the city in that rare, golden hush of December magic.

Trains at NorthPark

The Trains at NorthPark in Dallas is a beloved holiday tradition benefiting the Ronald McDonald House of Dallas. The exhibit spans more than 1,000 feet of track and features hundreds of model trains gliding through detailed miniature landscapes—from snowy forests to glowing city skylines. It’s part nostalgia, part artistry, capturing the quiet magic of motion in miniature.

Ride the North Pole Express in Grapevine

Just a short drive from Dallas, Grapevine calls itself the “Christmas Capital of Texas,” and the North Pole Express is its crown jewel. Passengers board a vintage train decked out in garlands and lights while “elves” hand out cookies and cocoa. The slow rhythm of the train mixed with carols and laughter feels straight from another era.

Each seat feels part of the story. Outside the window, lights streak by in a blur of red and gold, while inside, the car fills with laughter and warmth that lingers long after the ride ends.

Attend a Holiday Performance at the Winspear Opera House

If you prefer your Christmas spirit with a little elegance, the Winspear Opera House is where the season turns theatrical. From The Nutcracker to festive concerts, its glass façade glows in crimson light as guests spill into the night dressed in winter finery. Inside, it’s all velvet seats, soaring music, and quiet awe.

The performances feel timeless, like a holiday ritual repeated year after year. Even if you’ve seen The Nutcracker a dozen times, it feels new beneath the Winspear’s soft lights.

Experience Christmas at the Gaylord Texan

The Gaylord Texan Resort near Grapevine transforms into a winter citadel with towering ice sculptures, themed installations, and a snow tubing hill. You wander through massive halls glowing in icy blues and silvers, pausing to admire the detail carved into frozen figures. It’s extravagant in the best way possible.

Every corner feels alive with color and motion — swirling lights, children’s laughter, and the faint chill of real snow inside a Texas resort.

Shop and Sip at Bishop Arts District

When you need a slower, cozier moment, head to the Bishop Arts District. The small boutiques shimmer with lights, and the cafés hum with quiet warmth. It’s a place to browse handmade ornaments, sip mulled wine, and listen to someone strumming a guitar on a corner.

The neighborhood feels like a secret — intimate, a bit bohemian, and always a touch nostalgic. It’s Christmas, distilled into small, lovely moments. The neighborhood also hosts pop up bars like the Tipsy Elf and a Christmas market called Bishop Bazaar.

Holiday Nights at Klyde Warren Park

Downtown’s Klyde Warren Park turns festive with food trucks, live music, and a tree lighting ceremony that draws half the city. Kids run through the grass clutching glowing sticks, while adults lean back with cider and watch the skyline flicker to life.

It’s a distinctly Dallas version of holiday cheer — urban, a little grand, but still grounded in the joy of simply being outside among strangers who feel like friends for the night.

The season in Dallas feels like a long, glittering exhale at the end of the year. The city manages to mix warmth with wonder, nostalgia with spectacle, all threaded together by light. You leave December here with your hands a little colder, your heart a little fuller, and maybe a few new traditions worth keeping.

Best Hikes in Mesa Verde National Park

Hiking in Mesa Verde is one of the best ways to explore this incredible national park in Southwest Colorado. On the trails, you can enjoy unique geological formations, variety of archeological sites, and breathtaking vistas over the landscape.

The park has almost 30 miles of hiking trails open to visitors. Be sure to get a trail map at the Mesa Verde Visitor Center while you enter the park. Here are the best hiking trails in Mesa Verde National Park to go on your next trip.

Petroglyph Point Trail

Length – 2.4 miles, Difficulty – Strenuous

The Petroglyph Point trail is an adventurous hike that takes you through a rugged canyon to see ancient Pueblo petroglyphs as well as stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trail also has exceptional birds eye views of Spruce and Navajo canyons in Mesa Verde park. This is the most popular trail within the park and hence, quite crowded.

Personally, it is our favorite Mesa Verde hiking trail! It is also one of the best trails in Colorado. The trail begins near the Spruce Tree House Overlook and climbs up over the canyon. This scrambling and climbing over rocks part of the hike can feel pretty hard if you are not in good physical condition.

At 1.4 miles in, you will see ancient petroglyphs etched into the sandstone cliffs by the Ancestral Puebloan people. This petroglyph panel has motifs of hands, animal figures, spirals, and stick humans. Kids love seeing the petroglyphs on the canyon wall.

Past the panel, the trail is fairly level. From then, it is mostly an easy trip back to the Chapin Mesa Museum. This trail has lots of sun exposure, so its best to do it early in the morning or late afternoon.

Soda Canyon Overlook Trail

Soda Canyon Overlook Trail is one of the most hiked trails in Mesa Verde because of its amazing views of Balcony House. Balcony House is an ancient cliff dwelling site set high above the canyon and accessible only via a ranger-led tour.

For those not taking the tour, only way to see this remarkable site is via the overlook points on the trail. Soda Canyon trailhead is located on Cliff Palace Loop Road in the Chapin Mesa area of the national park. To reach it, drive along the one way road about a mile past Balcony House Parking Area.

Spruce Tree House Overlook

The Spruce Tree House is Mesa Verde’s third largest cliff dwelling. It is a complex of almost 130 rooms and supported about 80 people. Previously, it could be reached via the half mile long Spruce Tree House Trail. Spruce Tree House is named for the Douglas-fir trees aka spruce trees surrounding this cliff dwelling.

However, the trail was closed due to rock stability issues in 2015 and since then, the overlook is your best bet to see this ancient ruin. The short walk to the overlook starts from behind the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum.

It is vey easy to follow even for families with kids. At the end, you will reach a viewpoint that overlooks the Spruce Tree House. From here, you can appreciate this remarkable site without trespassing into restricted areas.

Spruce Canyon Trail

Length – 2.4 miles, Difficulty – Strenuous

Spruce Canyon Trail is a moderately strenuous hike that is accessible to both novice and advanced hikers. The trail leads you through the Spruce Tree Canyon, where you’ll see native flora and fauna as well as stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Keep your eyes peeled for the wildlife that abounds in the area, including deer, elk, and coyotes. Its no wonder that this trail is popular with nature lovers. The trailhead is located on at the Spruce Tree House Overlook behind the park museum.

Far View Sites Trail

Length – 0.75 miles, Difficulty – Easy to Moderate

The Far View Sites Trail is an easy to moderate hike that takes you to some of the most remote and ancient sites in Mesa Verde National Park. The trailhead is located in the Chapin Mesa area, just past the Far View Lodge.

The small paved trail takes you past several major sites – Far View House, Coyote Village, Far View Tower, Pipe Shrine House, Megalithic House, and Far View Reservoir. At these sites, you can explore the well-preserved ancient ruins of the Ancestral Puebloans on the mesa top, which date back to the 13th century.

The Far View Sites Trail is a great way to get a glimpse into the ancient culture of Mesa Verde and to enjoy a unique outdoor experience.

Farming Terrace Trail

Length – 0.5 miles, Difficulty – Easy

Farming Terrace Trail is one of the most underrated trails in Mesa Verde National Park. It is an easy hike that takes you to farming terraces constructed by the Puebloans. On the trail, you can see remnants of ancient dams and it is a great way to learn about the agricultural history of the area.

You can also see areas that were destroyed by the fire in the park several years ago. The trailhead is on the spur road to Cedar Tree Tower. This is definitely a must-do trail for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

Knife Edge Trail

Length – 2 miles, Difficulty – Easy

Want to enjoy incredible sunset views over the Montezuma Valley? Hike the very popular Knife Edge Trail! This hiking trail is located near Morefield Campground and is perfect for those staying here.

The trailhead is located right within the campground. This easy trail is mostly level and follows the now abandoned historic Knife Edge Road within the park. In the 1910s, this was the primary park road and led visitors to the cliff dwellings.

The trail rewards you with panoramic views of the park and the surrounding canyons and is just spectacular at sunset! The trail takes about one hour to complete.

Point Lookout Trail

Length – 2.2 miles, Difficulty – Moderate

Point Lookout is a 8400+ feet tall summit located within the national park. This sandstone peak towers high above the surrounding valley and has incredible views. Mesa Verde National Park Point Lookout Trail is a strenuous trail that climbs to the top of this summit. It is slightly challenging and has an elevation gain of 520 feet.

The trailhead is located near the campground and is one of the earliest trails you will encounter just past the entrance station. A large parking lot is located near the trailhead on Hopi road.

The trail starts flat and easy but then climbs up a mesa, which is where all the hard work comes in. The trail has multiple steep switchbacks that quickly put you in same elevation as the summit. At the end is a fairly level walk taking you to Point Lookout, from where you can enjoy stunning views.

Park Point Overlook

Located in Mesa Verde, Park Point Overlook is one of the most spectacular overlooks in the park. It is also the highest point in the park! The point offers incredible vistas over the Montezuma Valley and La Plata Mountains. The Park Point Overlook Trail is a short and easy trail that takes you from the parking lot to two observation decks.

Prater Ridge Trail

Length – 7.8 miles, Difficulty – Strenuous

Prater Ridge trail is for experienced hikers who are up for a challenge. This trail is also located in the Morefield Campground area of the park. It is a strenuous trail with an elevation gain of over 670 feet. The trail starts at the campground and winds through the mesa.

Along the trail, you will encounter a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and coyotes. You can choose between the North Loop, which features beautiful views of the Prater Canyon and the South Loop, which has overlooks over Montezuma Valley.

North Loop is a little over 5.5 miles while South Loop is much shorter hike at 2.4 miles. If you do both the loops, the 7.8 mile trail takes about 3 to 3.5 hours at a moderate pace. In late spring, the trail can be wet and muddy while in summer, you will find gorgeous wildflowers along the trail.

Long House Loop

Length – 5 miles, Difficulty – Moderate

Want to explore the hidden side of Mesa Verde? Take the time to visit the Wetherill Mesa region of the park. This area is relatively remote, has very few amenities, and is off the radar for most part. It is also home to Long House – the second largest cliff dwelling in the park.

While the archeological site can be seen up close on ranger led tours, it can be also seen from an overlook on the Long House Loop. The Long House Loop paved trail begins at the Wetherill Mesa information kiosk. It takes visitors to several sites including Long House overlook as well as Kodak House overlook. While the trail is long, it can be also done by mountain biking.

Badger House Community Trail

Length – 2.2 miles, Difficulty – Moderate

Badger House Community Trail is a gravel trail located in the Wetherill Mesa area of Mesa Verde National Park. The trail starts at the Wetherill Mesa information kiosk and leads to several archaeological sites. Here you will find 4 excavated mesa top villages and plenty of interesting archeological sites to keep you busy. The full loop is 2.2 miles long and takes about 2 hour including time to see the sites.

Step House Trail

Length – 1 mile, Difficulty – Moderate

Step House Trail is a lesser known trail located in the Wetherill Mesa region. This one-mile loop takes you to the beautiful Step House, which was built between 600 and 1300 A.D. It is one of the rare, free self-guided tours in the park that takes you to cliff dwellings. The trail is steep, downhill along a paved path and takes about an hour to complete, along with time spent to see the ruin.

Nordenskiold #16 Trail

Length – 2 miles, Difficulty – Easy

The Nordenskiold #16 Trail is perfect for those who are short on time and want to get a taste of what Mesa Verde has to offer. This trail can be found in the Wetherill Mesa area and takes about 1 hour minutes to complete. From the trail overlook, you can see the cliff dwellings and other archeological sites that were first documented by Gustaf Nordenskiöld, a Swedish geologist. It is incredible to see how well the cliff dwellings blend in the surrounding landscape!

Stay on trails
