People often wonder why – and the answer lies in its interesting history!
The land on which Garden of the Gods stands today was originally purchased by Charles Elliott Perkins in 1879.
Perkins was the President of the sprawling Burlington railroad that operated in the Midwest.
He was so enamored with the natural beauty of the area that he never built anything on the land and left it untouched.
On his death, his children transferred the land to the city of Colorado Springs as a gift in 1909, on the condition that it would always remain free to the public.
This altruistic act preserved Garden of the Gods for future generations, and since then it has become one of Colorado’s most beloved parks.
Ever wondered how the parks name came to be?
It was two surveyors who came across the area during their work.
While one of them though it was a great place for a beer garden, the other thought it was a garden fit for the gods!
